Good news for coffee lovers and more reasons for women to continue pouring their favourite cup of coffee; ?recent studies suggest that drinking about 5 cups of coffee every day can reduce one’s risk of developing certain aggressive forms of breast cancer.

The study is rather controversial considering early studies hint that caffeine can cause cancer of the breasts which just isn?t true. On the contrary, a study suggests that drinking significant amounts of coffee on a regular basis can lower cancer risk by as much as 20 percent. Having considered factors like age, education and alcohol intake, researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that subjects of their studies have more than halved their risk of developing breast cancers of the ER (Estrogen Receptors) negative kind.

Coffee and breast cancer prevention

Now you might be wondering – how reliable is the study? Is caffeine linked to breast cancer? These are probably some of the questions that you have in mind, and it would be helpful to learn a thing or two about how researchers conducted the study. More importantly, you would want to know how researchers linked coffee to cancer prevention and whether there is any merit to the study.

The research was population-based with approximately 2800 patients that have breast cancer and about 3,100 individuals who did not have the dreaded disease (control group). The researchers tracked coffee consumption and its relative effect to breast cancer growth.

Researchers further classified the subjects to the type of breast cancer they had – ER positive and ER negative group. The subjects were aged 50 to 74 years old. Researchers recorded information about caffeine intake, education, medical history, the number of children and vices such as alcohol and tobacco use.

Researchers also took into account the frequency of coffee consumption. Subjects that took only one cup of coffee a day or none at all were the control group. People involved in the study drank as much as 5 cups of coffee daily.

Caffeine and its relation to cancer cells

What does coffee have to do with breast cancer growth? Well, we do know that caffeine contains compounds and antioxidants that can affect breast cancer growth in some ways. For one thing, researchers found that coffee boosted levels of phytoestrogen in the body – a compound that the study found influences a reduction in ER-negative breast cancer cells.

However, you will find that many experts contest the result of research and dismiss it as inconclusive. Still, it is clear that coffee does not put women at risk of breast cancer as some people would believe. While the benefits of coffee in breast cancer reduction are yet to be confirmed, there are a few things that a woman can do to manage her risks. For one thing, you might want to start paying more attention to what you take into your body. Start eating healthy, exercise on a regular basis, avoid excessive alcohol intake, smoking and other habits that can harm the body. All these will help any woman stay healthy and less likely to fall ill to breast cancer coffee or not.

Can cancer patients drink coffee?

Yes, and as a matter of fact, many doctors recommend it. Clinic trials and medical experiments have long proven the cancer-fighting properties of caffeine. ?However, this is not to say that one should cease taking their cancer medication instead of the latter. If you love coffee, then there is no reason to stop drinking it.
