A homemade enema refers to liquid solution introduced into the colon via the rectum. The two main objectives of utilising an enema are to flush out wastes and impacted fecal materials from the colon out of the body. When compared to traditional constipation medication, an enema is considered a more efficient management option.

How does an enema for constipation work?

The combination of water and an osmotic agent that will draw water into the colon are essential requirements for an enema. Once the volume of the liquid reaches its peak, symptoms such as cramping, intestinal muscle movement, bloating, and a sudden urge to empty the bowels will occur.

What are the different types of enema for constipation relief?

There are five different types of enema that can be used to resolve both chronic and acute constipation.

  • Cleansing Enema

Cleansing enema is suitable for patients prior to surgery. It may also be done at home to fight bouts of constipation or removal of impacted fecal matter.

You can use a large or small volume of liquid solution to flush out wastes from the gut. ?A high cleansing enema is recommended for thorough cleansing of the entire length of the colon. A low enema on the other hand is used for shallow cleansing in that it only flushes out toxins and waste from the lower part of the large intestine.

  • Carminative Enema

A carminative enema is used to release distended gas in the large intestine. Only a small amount of water, between 60 ml and 80 ml is required for this type of enema.

  • Retention Enema

Retention enema makes use of prescription oils that are introduced into the colon via the rectum.

Antibiotic enema is indicated for people who suffer from localized bacterial infection. For instance, neomycin antibiotic is to control the bacteria population in the colon prior to surgical procedures.

  • Return Flow Enema

This is the perfect enema to expel stool and gas as a result of abdominal distention. Almost 200 ml of fluids are flushed in and out of the colon to trigger peristalsis.

  • Non Retention Enema

The most common solution used for non-retention enema to treat constipation is the Fleet Enema. It draws out water from the colon and effectively flushes away impacted stool after ????10 minutes.
